One of the premier botanical gardens in the United States, the prestigious New York Botanical Garden spans some 250 acres of the Bronx Park. Highlights in the Garden include an 1890s-vintage, wrought-iron framed, "crystal-palace style" greenhouse, the Peggy Rockefeller memorial rose garden, a Japanese rock garden, a 37 acre conifer collection, and extensive research facilities.

Each building in the facilities caters to a different specialty, some of which include a propagation center, a large library, and a herbarium of over seven million botanical specimens dating back more than three centuries.

At the heart of the Garden are 50 acres of virgin woodlands, representing the last stretch of original forest which once covered all of New York City. The forest itself is split by the Bronx River and includes a canyon and rapids.
